I’m a self-proclaimed makeup junkie. Very few things bring me more joy than getting lost in Sephora or playing around in Target‘s Beauty Department. Scouring through my stacks of magazines, I’m always looking for new tips and tricks to try (for the last couple of issues, Elle has had quite a few good picks).
I’m always experimenting with different looks to see which ones I can get away with, but I have to say, through the years, there are three tried and true looks that we all come back to: Dewy Skin, Bold Lips, and the all-time favorite, the Smokey Eye. Three celebrities who’ve perfected the looks are Chanel Iman, Hayden Panettiere, and Vanessa Hudgens.
Below are easy steps to achieve each look but… first things first:
DO YOU HAVE A SKINCARE ROUTINE?
It’s imperative that you have one in place so that your skin can look its best. Starting out with healthy, clear skin keeps you from having to pile on gobs and gobs of makeup to hide blemishes and imperfections. See, there’s makeup for television, makeup for movies, and makeup for everyday, so unless you’re a celebrity being stalked by the paparazzi, or shooting a music video, there’s no need to have that much makeup piled on. Skin needs to BREATHE so a heavy hand should be avoided.
If you don’t have a routine already, invest in a gentle cleanser, toner, and moisturizer for twice-daily use. You don’t have to break the bank for this: Cetaphil, Neutrogena, and Revision skin care are tried and true brands that are inexpensive but still get the job done. In addition to cleansing, exfoliate 2-3 days a week (try St. Ives Green Tea Scrub), to slough off dead skin and encourage cell renewal. A good skincare routine (combined with a healthy diet) will keep your skin smooth and clear, making it a beautiful canvas for one of these 3 looks.
Each look is super easy to do and great for night but with a little tweaking, each can be worn during the day as well.
Other Essentials:
L’Oreal Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base Primer, $13
Physicians Formula Glow-Boosting Pressed Bronzer,$15
Tips:
A good primer is essential for nights out. Using a base prior to applying makeup is key to keeping your makeup in place and keeping you out of the mirror.
Bronzer is a great alternative if you want a healthy glow but don’t want to fake bake or don’t like blush. Be sure to pick a color that doesn’t make you look orange!
Keep eyebrows groomed. The best shape for brows is a natural full shape. If brows are sparse (or you’re in the growing out process), use an eyebrow kit or pencil that’s one shade lighter to keep them looking natural (heavy, drawn on brows are not attractive). Fill in brows with small short strokes.
If you really want pretty peepers, curl lashes prior to applying mascara. Trust me, it makes a huge difference!

Have you had any experience with airbrush makeup? Like Luminess Air for example? Or do you suggest any other airbrushing? Thanks for the input and great post.

Thanks Chloe! I’ve never tried any airbrush makeup before but I’ve always wanted to.
