Yesterday I was listening to Lenny Kravitz’s “Lady” (one of my absolute most favorite tunes ever!) and images from Sarah Jessica Parker’s Fall 2004 GAP commercial popped into my head. Of course this meant I had to find it so I could watch it a gazillion times and dance around my room to it.
I will never forget the teasers they used to show leading up to the full commercial campaign release; the first 15 or so seconds of SJP walking to Lenny’s guitar riff from “Are You Gonna Go My Way” and then “How Do You Wear It” flashing across the screen use to give me goosebumps!
As herself and as Carrie Bradshaw, SJP was and still is a style icon for many women. This was probably one of the best brand/celebrity collaborations I’ve ever seen. GAP has always offered a quality product but this campaign was proof positive of the power of celebrity – or should I say, the right celebrity. GAP benefited from SJP’s magical style touch – the different looks she showcased throughout the video were in the essence of her most famous role but still in line with the spirit and image that GAP has always been known for. Consumers knew that they could trust what GAP offered while SJP showed alternate ways to wear pieces from that collection. Win-win, no?
This campaign was also the brands first time working with a celebrity on a broader scale than previous print and TV one time collabs. For fans like me, they knocked it out of the park – this is still one of my all-time favorite commercials ever.
Did you love this commercial when it aired? Did the looks inspire you in any way?
