Working in fashion and beauty, you’re constantly on the search for visual stimulation and inspiration. Seeing other’s creativity can definitely motivate you to improve upon your own craft, so there’s nothing I enjoy more than flipping through coffee table books, visiting museums, and walking through nature in search of a spark.
Last Saturday a friend and I visited the Dixon Museum to see the Memphis/Milano: 1980s Italian Design Exhibit, a curation of 150 works created by a design collective between 1981 and 1988.
Inspired by Memphis, TN, Memphis, Egypt, and Bob Dylan’s “Stuck in Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again“, a small group of designers from Europe and California brainstormed and created iconic pieces that were reflective of that decade’s trends but upon viewing now, they were still quite ahead of their time.
I was so inspired by the design of each piece. Thinking about current fashion trends, I could see the art’s influence, and it made me looks at a few color combinations differently (it’s always fun to step outside the box!) If you’re a creative in Memphis, this is definitely a must-see exhibit. It will be on display until July 13, 2014.
