Layering is a must for Fall fashion, and as the weather starts to cool, a sleeveless vest is a stylish yet unexpected third layer that makes for the perfect transitional piece in your wardrobe. If you’re someone that likes to play with proportions, a sleek sleeveless vest can accentuate your frame while also breaking up an otherwise simple outfit.
The key to this look is fit + length: you can go really long and wear it like a tunic ala Marissa Webb’s Celia Vest (pictured above) or pick one that’s slightly shorter and wear it over a striped tee and denim. Just make sure it skims the body. Even if you’re wearing it relaxed with boyfriend jeans or slightly edgier layered over a short skirt, just don’t go too big. Otherwise it will make you look short and squat (and nobody wants that!)
DIY TIP
If you’re not in a place to buy a new blazer (or you just want to experiment), you can easily flip an old, slightly oversized blazer into one. Go thrifting to look for interested patterns, or shop your own closet. Just carefully remove the sleeves and then re-stitch the opening (I’ve done this with dresses that fit perfectly through the body but the sleeves were a little snug). If you don’t know how to sew, take it to a tailor (shouldn’t cost that much). You can also do this with an old trench coat if you want one that’s really long.
There are so many ways to wear this trend, so have fun with it. Leopard print, neon, and even stripes will work well it so keep your accessories interesting to make the look your own!
