Last week I made my way over to City & State, a much buzzed about coffee shop that just opened at 2625 Broad Avenue. Even before I became a blogger, I loved to relax and people watch in coffee shops, so I was pleasantly surprised with the space when I got there.
In addition to the cafe area (a fairly open floor plan including large communal tables, a street facing counter area and smaller high tables), they offer finely curated goods from both local and national artisans and indie brands that aren’t found elsewhere in the city. It’s split into 2 sides, so after you order your latte (they offer a limited menu, which I like), you can peruse brands like Paper & Clay, Peg & Awl, imogene + willie, Prospector Co, and Herbivore Botanicals while you wait.
While there I ordered the Lumberjack Latte; a richly flavored roast with a touch of maple syrup, it was sweet but not saccharine, and the pecans added the perfect little buttery flavor and crunch.
They also have baked goods, but I’d just eaten and only wanted a caffeine fix. I chatted briefly with owner Lisa Toro while I snapped pictures (she owns it with her husband, Luis), and learned that they completely gutted the building during the build-out (which looks nothing like you’ve seen in Memphis).
They also carry indie mags like Darling, Kinfolk, and Weekend Almanac, which aren’t always available in smaller markets, so even if you’re just in need of your magazine fix, it’s worth a visit.
There are so many goodies in this place! They have a patio area as well, so I can’t wait until it really warms up so I can sit out and enjoy some sunshine with a good book.
