Yesterday was the official first day of Summer, and I don’t know how it is where you are but here, it’s HOT. I’m talking 90+ degrees, which means dressing for work is a PAIN. Being naked is not an option, so I’ve rounded up a few wardrobe staples for work.
If you’re lucky enough to work in a place where you can don jeans + a tee every day good for you, but for others that must be a little more put-together, these pieces will definitely help you get through the season. They’re all relatively lightweight, can do double duty (after work drinks, anyone?) but most importantly, they’re stylish classics. What does that mean? They never go out of style so you probably already have versions of them in your closet (yay!), but by experimenting with the color, texture, and fit, you can can easily curate a work wardrobe that will keep you feeling and looking cool every morning.
DRESSES
Essentials for the season. Long or short, structured or loose, pick out a few in bright hues. They can be worn alone or topped with a blazer or cardigan for the office.
Cross Back Maxi Dress, ASOS, $99
Textured Shift Dress, Forever 21, $28
LIGHTWEIGHT TOPS
Perfect for layering, swap out your button downs for silky tops or cotton tees to wear with your trousers and skirts. These pieces will easily transition to your weekend wardrobe as well (shorts + flippy skirts).
Classic Trapeze Tank, Forever 21, $7
Anytime Crewneck Tee, Victoria Secret, $29
SKIRTS
Tired of dresses but don’t want to wear pants? A knee or calf-length skirt is the way to go. Topping with a jacket might be too stuffy, so pair with a more structured top or slim-fitting tee + cardigan.
Textured Full Skirt, Banana Republic, $43
TROUSERS + DENIM
Linen trousers are an easy alternative to your regular work pants. They’re breathable, and a little easier to wear than the drapey joggers that people are fawning over right now. Just don’t go too loose! For denim, go with a slim-fit or skinny ankle length in a dark wash. Mid-rise is easiest for curvier girls, and the darker rinse makes them apropos with a blazer for casual Fridays in the office.
Sweetheart Skinny Jean, Old Navy, $25
LIGHTWEIGHT BLAZERS
You probably have a thousand blazers in your closet, so pull out the ones that are cotton, linen, or even crepe, and remember to add a statement necklace for an extra polished look. Keep these in rotation for sleeveless dresses + denim (just tuck it in your bag during your commute), and push up the sleeves to keep the look relaxed.
Straight Cut Blazer, Zara, $80
Royal Striped Boyfriend Blazer, Windsor, $30
EXTRAS
Heels and ballet flats are already in your repertoire, so incorporate a pair of sleek wedges into the mix. The elevation makes it easy to run around w/out killing your feet, and depending on the style of wedge (keep the straps thin), you can dress up your more casual skirts + rompers for work. Grab your makeup bag, iPad and other daily essentials and drop it into a large, slightly structured tote and you’re good to go!.
