I’m a big fan of dark berry and merlot colored lipcolors, especially for Fall. There’s just something cool about the vampy shades that make them work especially well when the temps have dropped and it’s overcast outside. Being that I own a ton (I’m talking at least 10. YES, I have a makeup addiction so let’s keep it moving), I wanted to share a few shades just in case you were looking for some yourself. And funnily enough, the ones that I reach for the most are actually from the drugstore (NYX products are hands-down my favorite. Great price point, and I’ve yet to find a formula I don’t like). Whether it’s a matte lip cream or a super silky lipstick formula, the color payoff has been exactly what I wanted.
A few things to keep in mind when wearing a dark lip:
Exfoliate, exfoliate, EXFOLIATE. A matte finish is one of the most popular formulas right now, and if your lips aren’t smooth it absolutely will show. Use a lip exfoliator, or take it old school and dab some vaseline on your lips then scrub with an old toothbrush. Lips will be super smooth.
If you’re worried about precision, use a lipliner. You can do the outline and fill in to ensure that you have even coverage as it starts to fade, or just use it alone and top with a lip balm if you want it to be a little creamier.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with the rest of your makeup. A merlot lip looks boss with a killer winged liner, but you can keep your face super fresh by pairing it with a groomed brow and lots of mascara (top and bottom lashes). If your face feels “flat” after aplying, just add highlighter.
