Earlier this month I had the pleasure of going to the soft opening of the newly remodeled Hog + Hominy. After almost 2 years of being closed due to a fire and setbacks because of the pandemic, they are now officially opened!
Hog + Hominy is an Italian restaurant with southern roots. Voted one of GQ’s 12 Most Outstanding Restaurants in 2013, the restaurant has been a local foodie fave for years, so I was excited to visit and try out their new menu. They didn’t completely change their menu, but they did take the time to develop new offerings during their time of being closed and it was totally worth it. No desserts were available to try that night, but we (my friend Michael joined me) enjoyed cocktails, apps and pizza.
First up where the PIG EARS (buffalo, celery, lime, ranch), which are very similar to pork rinds, IMO. They’re crispy and spicy and yummy to snack on.
Next up was MY MIDDLE NAME IS DANGER (select aperitivo, citrus, juniper, last word powder, sparkling wine), which is very reminiscent of an Aperol Spritz. This might be my go-to cocktail when I visit.
The PRINCESS FIONA (coconut rum, hurricane proof rum, pistachio orgeat, citrus, angostura) has a “milkier” base and reminds me a little of a boozy milkshake.
The COLLARDS + HOMINY (collards, benton’s bacon, hominy, pepper vinegar) are a southern classic and seasoned quite well.
The MEATBALLS (guanciale, pancetta, garlic, tomato sugo) are an Italian favorite and are perfect for a light bite.
PIZZA THE HUT (tomato, mozzarella, calabrese, sausage, mushroom connserva, caramelized onion, cerignole olives) is a new item and one that I think will become a foodie favorite, especially for those that love veggies on their pizza. The meat to veggie ratio is perfect!
I’m happy to learn that their Peanut Butter Pie is still on the menu, so I’ll be having a slice the next time I visit! In addition to their new menu items, the renovations have allowed them to open up the space for seating, expand the bar area and also add outdoor seating. It’s perfect for a family night out but also super cute for date night as well.
Thank you for having us, Hog + Hominy!
