What’s cooler than taking the leap into entrepreneurship and opening your own brick + mortar business? Doing it with one of your favorite family members! Cousins Angelique + Rachel decided to combine their respective businesses (Mucho + RM Petit Cakes, LLC) under one roof to open Primas Bakery + Boutique, an uber cute lifestyle concept offering petite sweet treats and unique boutique finds in Downtown Memphis.
Primas means cousins in Spanish, so it was the perfect name for their business. The shared business concept (boutique + bakery) is unique in Memphis, and I popped in last month to chat with the cute #bossbabes about Primas and to get a full look at the space.
Why downtown Memphis?
We knew we were interested in either Midtown or Downtown. We looked at a few places in both areas. South Main has always held a special place in both of our hearts. There is such a big revitalization going on in the neighborhood, and we thought it was perfect timing to put our mark on the area.
What do you feel sets Primas apart from other bakeries + boutiques?
Well for one—there aren’t any bakery and boutique combos in Memphis! Rachel’s delicious mignardises (small bite pastries) are very unique to the area. She puts a modern twist on traditional pastries. Angelique’s boutique is also one-of-a-kind because she carries Latin-inspired clothing, accessories, and home decor unique to the Memphis area (Angelique is Mexican American and she’s curated pieces that you would typically find at Mexican markets or Tex-Mex boutiques).
What’s your favorite part about working together?
Starting a new business is hard work! Working side-by-side with someone you trust is so important. It allows us the opportunity to lean on each other creatively. Together—we have big ideas!
Seeing women come together in business will always be inspiring (and it doesn’t hurt that it’s being done in such a cute way!), and I love how many small businesses are coming to South Main Street. If you find yourself taking a stroll downtown, be sure to stop in and grab a coffee or treat and a little “happy” for yourself. But be warned: they also have a killer playlist (think a mix of 90s alternative with some R&B thrown in) and you won’t want to leave, lol.
Be sure to follow Primas on Instagram; they frequently have events and tastings, and they try to partner with other locally-owned businesses to help build community as well. They’ve also submitted to the FEDEX Small Business Grant Contest: click here to view their submission and cast your vote.
